Blood & Honey

- Shelby Mahurin

GOODREADS BOOK BLURB:

After narrowly escaping death at the hands of the Dames Blanches, Lou, Reid, Coco, and Ansel are on the run from coven, kingdom, and church—fugitives with nowhere to hide.

To elude the scores of witches and throngs of chasseurs at their heels, Lou and Reid need allies. Strong ones. But protection comes at a price, and the group is forced to embark on separate quests to build their forces. As Lou and Reid try to close the widening rift between them, the dastardly Morgane baits them in a lethal game of cat and mouse that threatens to destroy something worth more than any coven.

MY REVIEW:

not my cup of tea:
2/5
After finishing Blood & Honey, I have the most overwhelming feeling of disappointment. The story didn’t go anywhere, and all the characters were useless.

I don’t know how often these characters need to make the same mistakes until they start learning something. Lou keeps secrets and tells lies, and Reid hates magic and doesn’t trust anyone. Despite everything they’ve faced together, there’s no growth, and their relationship is going backwards instead of developing. I was so bored with all of their dialogue that I started to wish they’d be separated for the entire book.

The narrative rambles through a potential plot without seeming to commit to anything. At some point, I stopped caring and just read to finish the book. There was no complexity to the story, and everything happened exactly as expected. I wanted to learn more about the different types of magic and these witches, but I can honestly say we got nothing new in Blood & Honey that we didn’t already know in Serpent & Dove.

It took me ages to finish Blood & Honey because I had no desire to return and keep reading. If Gods & Monsters isn’t any better fairly early on, I’m going to have to DNF – I can’t go through this again.
