Destroy Me

- Tahereh Mafi

GOODREADS BOOK BLURB:

Back at the base and recovering from his near-fatal wound, Warner must do everything in his power to keep his soldiers in check and suppress any mention of a rebellion in the sector. Still as obsessed with Juliette as ever, his first priority is to find her, bring her back, and dispose of Adam and Kenji, the two traitors who helped her escape. But when Warner’s father, The Supreme Commander of The Reestablishment, arrives to correct his son’s mistakes, it’s clear that he has much different plans for Juliette. Plans Warner simply cannot allow.

SERIES / GENRES:

FIRST WORDS:

I’ve been shot.
And, as it turns out, a bullet wound is even more uncomfortable than I had imagined.

MY REVIEW:

solid, good read:
4/5
I enjoyed this more than Shatter Me because it provided complexity to a very one-dimensional character.

Mafi has managed to make Warner a more believable character without making excuses for his actions. I appreciate that he has these incredible breakthroughs about the similarities between his childhood and Juliette’s and manages to come to an entirely different outcome. Where Juliette suffers abuse and decides not to inflict any on others, Warner takes his abuse and manipulates it into a sense of revenge or justice. He is cruel but overwhelmed with empathy, twisting himself into a person who survives and even thrives in this harsh and terrible world.

I’m not sure if there’s a redemptive arc in store for Warner, and I’m not sure if it could be done believably, but some seeds here could be nurtured in that direction. It would certainly add some interest to this series, which is a little dull at face value. Destroy Me has certainly kindled more of an interest in this series than Shatter Me did for me.
