Fracture Me

- Tahereh Mafi

GOODREADS BOOK BLURB:

As Omega Point prepares to launch an all-out assault on The Reestablishment soldiers stationed in Sector 45, Adam’s focus couldn’t be further from the upcoming battle. He’s reeling from his breakup with Juliette, scared for his best friend’s life, and as concerned as ever for his brother James’s safety. And just as Adam begins to wonder if this life is really for him, the alarms sound. It’s time for war.

On the battlefield, it seems like the odds are in their favor—but taking down Warner, Adam’s newly discovered half brother, won’t be that easy. The Reestablishment can’t tolerate a rebellion, and they’ll do anything to crush the resistance . . . including killing everyone Adam has ever cared about.

SERIES / GENRES:

FIRST WORDS:

“Addie? Addie, wake up. Addie—”
I roll over with a groan and stretch, rubbing both eyes with the heel of my hand. It’s too early for this shit.
“Addie—”
Still half asleep, I grab James by the collar and yank him down, shoving his head under the blanket. He shouts and I laugh, wrapping him up in the sheets until he can’t get out.

MY REVIEW:

average:
3/5
Fracture Me is Adam’s perspective during the events at the end of Unravel Me, and there’s a little too much overlap of things we already know to make it interesting.

It turns out most of Adam’s thoughts are pretty pathetic. I’m now regretting my complaints about his one-dimensionality because the lack of complexity was not a writing issue but a personality issue. I knew the destruction of Adam’s character was coming due to the start of Warner’s (possible) redemption arc, but I wasn’t expecting it to be so pitiful. His mind is a misogynistic black hole where common sense goes to die. Juliette has so much power that no one is sure how much damage she could actually do, and yet he still thinks she should be staying behind and cowering while he, the big strong man with boring, useless (against these enemies) powers, should be in charge. So predictably boring.

I hope we don’t have to deal with his perspective again moving forward.
