Gods & Monsters

- Shelby Mahurin

GOODREADS BOOK BLURB:

Evil always seeks a foothold. We must not give it one.

After a heartbreaking loss, Lou, Reid, Beau, and Coco are bent on vengeance more than ever before—and none more so than Lou.

But this is no longer the Lou they thought they knew. No longer the Lou that captured a chasseur’s heart. A darkness has settled over her, and this time it will take more than love to drive it out.

MY REVIEW:

solid, good read:
4/5
Gods & Monsters was better than Serpent & Dove, but suffered from living under the shadow of Blood & Honey. I felt like I was on watch, waiting for it to be bad so I could justifiably give up on the entire series. Thankfully, Gods & Monsters was excellent, and I made it through.

There’s a lot of tension and, unlike Blood & Honey, a lot of following through on plans, not just talking about them. It was nice to feel like they were constantly moving and doing something and making things happen, so there’s a good pace to the narrative.
While Reid losing his memory of Lou was a bit contrived, it did help to explore whether he would have fallen in love with her knowing she was a witch. It’s a little muddied by lust and sense memory, but it was an interesting idea.
I wasn’t very interested in the relationship drama – who really cares whether Coco and Beau are into each other? But I was very interested in dragons and mermaids and werewolves and different kinds of witches and how they could work together. Throw in a few gods, and it just gets better and better.

I wish Blood & Honey hadn’t taken the joy out of the series so I could have gone into Gods & Monsters with more excitement. Despite this setback, I enjoyed Gods & Monsters and thought it ended the series on a high.
