MY REVIEW:
I will never get enough of Nick and Charlie.
It was nice to get a little more development of the side characters in this volume. I have a huge soft spot for Tao and Elle in the show, so Heartstopper Volume Three is giving me hope for them in the next season. I also enjoyed the stolen moments with the chaperones – I wish there had been more from them! There’s a lot to love about graphic novels (quick reads, silent and active moments that come off better as pictures than words) but they do seem limited by how much story you can tell in one book.
The only reason I’ve dropped half a star from the previous two volumes is that there are starting to be some repetitive moments. And no, I wouldn’t want to change them – Nick and Charlie should be checking in with each other constantly. Coming out is a big deal for both of them – Charlie has had so little control that it’s showing up in different ways in his life, and Nick is still so new to all of this that it’s impossible to know for sure how it will feel when he does. So yes, they should constantly be checking in with each other, but, graphic novels are quick and short – I’d rather have more about Nick’s family, or Tara and Darcy, or Tao and Elle (or the chaperones). Let’s be serious, though – I’ve rated it 4.5 stars, not 3 – and I’m obviously feeling pretty defensive about it. Did I not make myself clear? I freaking love this series and these characters.
