Habitat, Range, Niche, Territory

- Martha Wells

GOODREADS BLURB:

Home: Habitat, Range, Niche, Territory is a short story set in the world of Martha Well’s Murderbot Diaries. This story was originally given free to readers who pre-ordered Network Effect, the fifth entry in the series.

The events of Home: Habitat, Range, Niche, Territory occur just after the fourth novella, Exit Strategy.

This short story can now be found here.

FIRST WORDS:

“Is this really a good idea?”

MY REVIEW:

almost perfect:
4.5/5

I wish Home was so much longer. As much as I usually love Murderbot’s cynical and surprisingly emotional monologue, it was refreshing to have a new perspective. And besides ART from Artificial Condition, Dr Mensah is the only other perspective I’d be interested in.

Home doesn’t further the plot or change anything we already know; it’s just a small window on Dr Mensah immediately following Exit Strategy – a quick emotional update from a human perspective.

If nothing else, it made me even more keen to get my hands on Network Effect. I’ve been waiting over a month for my Libby hold to come through, and it’ll be pushed right to the top of my TBR once it does. I’m excited to see whether the novelty of Murderbot, so sharp and enticing in these novellas (and now a short story), can prop up an entire novel.
