The only reason I’ve given this four stars instead of five is because of how rushed the narrative felt. In just over 200 pages we follow Alanna through her squire years into becoming a knight. Through the acquisition of a new pet and a magical token, sorcery attacks in many forms, duels, war, and life at court, these are definitely not quiet years. With so much covered in so few pages, it’s not surprising that this book feels rushed. I still loved every page, I just wish there were more of them; I want to settle into the aftermath of all these events, not have them treated as a jumping-off point to another time in the future right after they’re completed.

Alanna is becoming more well-rounded with time. Not only is she making a name for herself with her skills, but she’s embracing her friendships and learning to accept her feminine side when she can. She makes friends wherever she goes with her curious nature and willingness to do more than her fair share of work. Thom makes more appearances this time around, reminding Alanna of family and home, and George and Jon are always around, reminding her that one day she might want more than she’s willing to accept right now.

I’m still on a nostalgia high, working my way through this series again, and I’m excited to revisit the adventures Sir Alanna has coming up in the remaining two instalments.
