Little Women

- Louisa May Alcott

GOODREADS BOOK BLURB:

The timeless tale of four sisters – Meg, Jo, Amy and Beth – experiencing both hardship and adventure in Civil War New England. Though the March family may be poor, their lives are rich with colour, as they play games, put on wild theatricals, make new friends, argue, grapple with their vices, learn from their mistakes, nurse each other through sickness and disappointments, and get into all sorts of trouble.

SERIES / GENRES:

FIRST WORDS:

“Christmas won’t be Christmas without any presents,” grumbled Jo, lying on the rug.
“It’s so dreadful to be poor!” sighed Meg, looking down at her old dress.
“I don’t think it’s fair for some girls to have plenty of pretty things, and other girls nothing at all,” added little Amy, with an injured sniff.
“We’ve got father and mother and each other,” said Beth contentedly, from her corner.

MY REVIEW:

enjoyable/easy to read:
3.5/5
Little Women is one of those classics I don’t know much about. I’ve seen a few adaptations, but nothing has left a big mark. I suppose I have a predilection towards Regency fiction and haven’t explored many American classics.

It is a little difficult to get past the strong religious overtones – they are a central theme and a major plot point of the little disasters these sisters find themselves in. Nevertheless, the chapters are nice and short and choppy, so they aren’t overwhelming or preachy.

I like how unique each of the sisters is. It causes quite a few disagreements, but, like an after-school special, they always come together in the end. It may be a little juvenile for my taste, but it would be unfair to project my expectations of contemporary young adult fiction to something published in 1868. And I will say it was a nice change to be situated in a family who has to work and provide for themselves, rather than just travelling between estates and taking long walks.

I am interested to see where this story goes. Hopefully, as the characters age, the narrative will mature as well.
