My Mechanical Romance

- Alexene Farol Follmuth

Goodreads Book Blurb:

Bel would rather die than think about the future. College apps? You’re funny. Extracurriculars? Not a chance. But when she accidentally reveals a talent for engineering at school, she’s basically forced into joining the robotics club. Even worse? All the boys ignore Bel—and Neelam, the only other girl on the team, doesn’t seem to like her either.

Enter Mateo Luna, captain of the club, who recognizes Bel as a potential asset—until they start butting heads. Bel doesn’t care about Nationals, while Teo cares too much. But as the nights of after-school work grow longer and longer, Bel and Teo realize they’ve made more than just a combat-ready robot for the championship: they’ve made each other and the team better. Because girls do belong in STEM.

My Review:

***Thanks to NetGalley and Holiday House for an eARC of this book. The following review is my honest reflection on the text provided.

enjoyable/easy to read:
3.5/5
My Mechanical Romance is a sweet, wholesome YA romance with some women in STEM badassery thrown in.

Everyone at this school has plans, and then they want me to have plans, and I'm just so overwhelmed by their good intentions that I constantly feel the need to lie down for a solid five minutes before trying again.

The writing style is a little slow for me, but it’s because the story really wants you to sit in the details, which I can appreciate. There isn’t any fake relationship drama with miscommunication – at least not more than you would expect from mature teenagers. I respect the growth Bel shows from the beginning, and I love that the narrative takes very realistic twists and turns. We’re talking about teenagers in high school who are about to go to college – there are going to be problems, and some of them are going to be insurmountable, and I am grateful My Mechanical Romance tackles this appropriately. There’s some side drama that feels unnecessary at times, but overall I enjoyed this read.
