Rogue Protocol

- Martha Wells

GOODREADS BOOK BLURB:

SciFi’s favorite antisocial A.I. is again on a mission. The case against the too-big-to-fail GrayCris Corporation is floundering, and more importantly, authorities are beginning to ask more questions about where Dr. Mensah’s SecUnit is.

And Murderbot would rather those questions went away. For good.

FIRST WORDS:

I have the worst luck with bot-driven transports.

MY REVIEW:

solid, good read:
4/5
As much as I love Murderbot’s inner monologue, I really missed ART’s input and support that was so present in Artificial Condition. I was worried that the incredible dialogue between Murderbot and ART in Artificial Condition would be the high point in this series, and as enjoyable as Rogue Protocol was, it just could not live up to the previous instalment.

That’s not to say that Miki did not add something new to the equation. Yes, the unfailing friendly perky attitude was a lot at first, but I found myself warming to the bot in the same way Murderbot wouldn’t admit to doing.
The level of betrayal Murderbot felt, causing it to stop communicating directly with Miki once Abene knew it was Rin, clearly demonstrated how much it had trusted Miki, not to mention the dejection once Miki was crushed.
Miki may not have the charisma and power of ART, but the bot was helpful and smarter than Murderbot was willing to admit.

It was interesting to see Murderbot fall back into playing the SecUnit, especially around humans who aren’t sure what it should look like. It’s a good thing it has a lot of processing power – there were a lot of lies to multiple entities to keep straight here, all while hacking and coding and playing security guard. It left very little time for serials, though I did enjoy the hostage negotiation and drone-attracting snippets from popular media.

With every novella, I’m pleasantly surprised at the direction Wells decides to take the narrative. This is the first time I’ve had an idea of where Exit Strategy is going, and I’m definitely excited.
